--The first school in the United States--King William’s School--opened in Maryland in 1696.

--Our country's first dental school was located at the University of Maryland.

--Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore and attended Saint Mary's Industrial School.

--Other Major League baseball players born in Maryland include Cal Ripken, Jr., Billy Ripken, Lefty Grove, Frank Baker, Harold Baines, Al Kaline, Denny Neagle and Jimmie Foxx.

--Francis Scott Key, who penned our National Anthem, was a lawyer in Maryland.

--The first successful manned balloon launch in the U.S. took place in Baltimore, when 13 year old Edward Warren took to the air on June 24,1784.
